Betty's Complete Guide to Personal Lubricant
At Betty’s Toy Box, we talk about lubricant a lot and for good reason. It’s one of the simplest ways to make intimacy more comfortable, more pleasurable, and more relaxed. It can heighten sensations to the next level and add to the excitement of an erotic encounter.
But despite how common it is, with hundreds of brands available everywhere from drug stores to big box chains, many people still have questions. What kind of lubricant should you use? Why do some work better than others? What kinds of ingredients should you look out for - good and bad? And what do things like pH balance or glycerin-free actually mean?
Our team has helped thousands of customers choose lubricants over the years, and we’ve heard just about every question you can imagine. So we put together this guide to walk you through everything you need to know, from the different types of lubricants to how they interact with your body.
Whether you’re exploring toys, dealing with vaginal dryness, navigating menopause, or simply looking to make intimacy feel even better, the right lubricant can make a remarkable difference.
Let’s dive in.

What Is Personal Lubricant?
Personal lubricant, or simply “lube,” is a liquid or gel designed to reduce friction during intimate activities. That can include:
- Sex with a partner
- Masturbation
- Using sex toys
- Anal play
- Enhancing comfort during penetration
By reducing friction, lubricant helps protect delicate tissue while making touch feel smoother and more pleasurable.
A lot of people assume lubricant is only for when something isn’t working the way it should. In reality, we often tell customers that lubricant is simply an enhancement. Even if your body produces natural lubrication, adding a little extra can make things feel dramatically better.
Why Natural Lubrication Doesn’t Always Happen
One thing we reassure customers about all the time at Betty’s is that needing lubricant is incredibly normal. Bodies don’t always respond the same way every time, and there are many reasons natural lubrication may be reduced or absent.
Vaginas typically (but not always) produce lubrication during arousal, but a surprising number of everyday factors can affect that process. Some of the most common reasons include:
- Hormonal changes during perimenopause and menopause
- Certain medications, including antihistamines, antidepressants, and some birth control pills
- Stress or anxiety, which can interrupt the body’s natural arousal response
- Fatigue or lack of sleep
- Breastfeeding or postpartum hormone shifts
- Medical treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation
- Natural aging of vaginal tissue
- Not enough time for arousal or foreplay
It’s also worth remembering that arousal is both physical and psychological. Even when someone is mentally interested in intimacy, the body doesn’t always produce lubrication right away. That’s where lubricant becomes incredibly helpful. Rather than fighting your body or feeling frustrated, adding a little lubrication can simply make things more comfortable and enjoyable.
At Betty’s we like to remind customers that lubricant isn’t a “fix” for something that’s wrong. It’s just another tool that helps intimacy feel better.
A Quick Note About Vaginal pH Balance
One thing we’ve learned over the years is that customers appreciate understanding how products interact with their bodies.
The vagina naturally maintains a slightly acidic environment, typically with a pH between about 3.8 and 4.5. This acidity helps protect the vaginal microbiome by supporting beneficial bacteria that keep harmful microbes in check. When a lubricant is wildly different from this natural pH, it may cause irritation for some people.
That’s why many l(but not all) lubricants designed for vaginal use are formulated to support this natural balance. When customers have sensitivities or recurring irritation, we often recommend looking for products that are specifically pH-balanced for vaginal health.
For the perimenopausal and menopausal vagina, the decline in estrogen creates a less acidic, higher pH level - around pH 5.0–6.5. This means some lubricants that are pH-balanced can cause irritation. We tackle this further on in this guide and recommend some alternatives.
Anal tissue is a little different. Its pH is more neutral, so pH balance tends to matter less there.
What Is Osmolality?
Another term you might see when researching lubricants is osmolality. This refers to how concentrated a product is compared to the fluids in your body. If a lubricant has very high osmolality, it can draw moisture out of delicate tissue. Over time, this can leave skin feeling drier or irritated rather than comfortable.
Many newer lubricants are formulated with this in mind, aiming for levels that are gentler and closer to the body’s natural environment. You don’t necessarily need to memorize the numbers, but it’s one of the reasons we encourage customers to choose quality products designed specifically for intimate use.

Common Lubricant Ingredients Explained
When we speak to customers, one of the most common questions we hear is about ingredients. People want to know what they’re putting on their bodies and that’s a great instinct. Here are a few ingredients you may see in lubricants and what they do.
Glycerin
Glycerin is sometimes used in water-based lubricants to create a smooth texture and help retain moisture. Because glycerin is a sugar alcohol, it can break down glucose in the vaginal environment and cause yeast infections. Some people with very sensitive skin or who are prone to yeast infections prefer glycerin-free formulas. This includes anybody in menopause or with diabetes.
Propylene Glycol
This ingredient helps maintain moisture and texture in many water-based lubricants. It is one of the more common causes of skin irritation in personal care products. It also has a high osmolality which means it actually draws moisture out of vaginal cells, making dryness worse in the long run. Like glycerin, some people prefer to avoid it if they are prone to irritation.
Aloe
Aloe is often added for its soothing and moisturizing properties. Unlike glycerin or propylene glycol, aloe helps retain moisture in the vaginal tissues. Many customers enjoy aloe-based lubricants because they feel gentle and hydrating, with a smooth slide.
Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid is commonly used in skincare because it helps hold moisture in tissue. It is something the body already produces and uses for tissue hydration and repair, making it an ideal ingredient for vaginal lubricants. It is particularly helpful for vaginas that have perimenopausal and menopausal thinning tissues.
Parabens
Parabens are preservatives used to extend shelf life. They are problematic in lubricants because they mimic estrogen in the body, and because vaginal tissue absorbs them directly into the bloodstream. Using a lubricant containing them repeatedly is one of the more direct ways to introduce a hormone-disrupting chemical into your system. Many modern lubricants are now formulated without parabens for customers who prefer simpler ingredient lists.
When in doubt, we always recommend choosing lubricants from trusted manufacturers that specialize in sexual wellness products.
The Lube Regulation Loophole
You may be wondering why we are talking about things like harmful or irritating ingredients in personal lubricants. After all, aren’t there regulations about these kinds of things? The answer is not that simple.
Personal lubricants are classified as medical devices by the FDA, but a combination of classification loopholes and inconsistent enforcement means many lubricants reach store shelves without rigorous independent scrutiny. Compounding this, manufacturers are not required to disclose pH or osmolality values on product labels, leaving consumers with no practical way to identify potentially irritating or tissue-damaging ingredients at the point of purchase.
All of this means we at Betty’s step in and do our own research about ingredients so that you don’t have to.

The Four Main Types of Lubricant
Most lubricants fall into three main categories:
Each has its own strengths depending on how you plan to use it.
Water-Based Lubricants
Water-based lubricants are usually the first thing we recommend to someone exploring lubricants for the first time. They’re versatile, easy to clean up, and compatible with most toys and condoms. Customers tend to like them because they feel light and natural on the skin. They are the closest to the feel of natural vaginal lubrication.
There are also water-based gels or jelle lubricants which use a body safe thickener to give a water-based lubricant a thicker, more gel-like texture. These are great for anybody who finds typical water based lubricant too watery and they particularly shine when used with pleasure products like vibrators.
Why people like water-based lube
- Safe with most sex toys Condom compatible
- Easy to wash off skin and sheets
- Natural feeling texture
The main trade-off is that water-based formulas can dry out faster and absorb into the skin. If things go on for a while, you might just add a little more.

Silicone Lubricants
Silicone lubricants are famous for one thing: they last a long time. Instead of absorbing into the skin, silicone molecules stay on the surface and create a silky glide that can last through extended sessions.
We often recommend silicone lubricants for:
- Shower or bath play
- Anal play
- People experiencing vaginal dryness
- Longer intimate sessions
Another benefit is that silicone lubricants are pH-neutral. Because silicone is chemically inert, it doesn’t interact with the body’s natural acidity the way some water-based formulas might.
One thing to watch for is compatibility with certain silicone toys, as silicone-on-silicone contact can sometimes affect the toy’s surface. In addition, silicone can stain clothing and bedding, so it is wise to put down a towel or throw when using silicone lubricant.

Hybrid Lubricants (Water + Silicone Blends)
Another option we often recommend to customers at Betty’s is hybrid lubricant, which combines water-based and silicone ingredients into a single formula.
Hybrid lubricants are designed to give you the best of both worlds. The water component keeps the lubricant light, natural feeling, and easy to clean up, while the silicone component adds longer-lasting glide.
Many people love hybrids because they stay slippery longer than traditional water-based lubricants but don’t feel quite as silky or heavy as pure silicone formulas.
Why people choose hybrid lubricants
Hybrid lubricants can be a great choice for people who want:
- Longer-lasting lubrication without constant reapplication
- A lighter feel than pure silicone
- Easy cleanup compared to silicone-only formulas
- Extra glide for sex toy play
Because hybrids contain only a small amount of silicone, they are often compatible with many toys, though it’s still a good idea to check manufacturer recommendations when using them with silicone toys.
Hybrid formulas can also work well for people who find water-based lubricants dry out too quickly but don’t want the full slickness of silicone. At Betty’s, hybrid lubricants are a popular middle-ground option for couples and toy users who want something versatile, long-lasting, and comfortable.

Oil-Based Lubricants
Oil-based lubricants feel rich and they are long-lasting. Some customers enjoy them for massage or extended external play because they stay slippery for a long time and can feel moisturizing. Oil based lubes truly shine as masturbation creams for the penis but they can also be used for:
- External vulva moisturizing
- Erotic Massage
- Anal play
A couple of important things to remember: oil-based lubricants should not be used with latex condoms. Oil degrades latex condoms rapidly and significantly, reducing burst strength by up to 90% within 60 seconds of contact in some studies. Oil-based lubricants can also be incompatible with silicone toys.
Oil-based lubricants (including coconut oil) can disrupt the vaginal pH levels and cause further irritation. Most have a pH significantly higher than even the menopausal vaginal range, potentially pushing pH further in the wrong direction with regular use. They do not flush out of the vagina easily and can trigger yeast infections.
Like silicone, oil based lubricants can stain bedding and clothing. Use a towel or throw to protect your fabrics.

Specialty Lubricants
Lubricant for Anal Play
The proper lubricant for anal play is something our staff talk about a lot with customers who are curious about exploring anal play. Unlike the vagina, the rectum does not produce natural lubrication, which means adding lubricant isn’t just helpful, it’s essential.
For anal play, we usually suggest thicker or longer-lasting lubricants, such as:
- Silicone lubricants
- Thick water-based gels
- Silicone/water hybrids
- Specialty anal lubricants
Some anal lubricants contain natural relaxants to help slightly loosen the muscles and allow for more comfortable penetration.
While there are some numbing lubricants out there, we at Betty’s don’t carry them and strongly advise against using them. It is important to feel the body’s natural reactions, including pain and discomfort, so you know your limits and don’t cause physical damage.
And our number one piece of advice with anal lubricants? Use way more than you think you need.

Natural and Organic Lubricants
Natural and organic lubricants are a go-to for many of our customers who want something that feels gentle, simple, and closer to what their body already knows.
These formulas are typically made with ingredients like aloe vera, carrageenan, plant extracts, and vitamins such as Vitamin E or D. Many are designed to be soothing and hydrating, making them a great option for people with sensitivities or those looking to avoid certain synthetic ingredients.
Depending on the formulation, natural lubricants can do more than just provide glide. Some are designed to support vaginal moisture, soothe irritation, and help maintain overall comfort, especially for those experiencing dryness due to hormones, stress, or sensitivity. At Betty’s, we often recommend natural options to customers who:
- Have sensitive skin
- Prefer simpler ingredient lists
- Are looking for a more body-friendly feel
- Want a lubricant that can double as a light daily moisturizer
That said, “natural” doesn’t always mean perfect for everyone. It’s still important to check ingredients, especially if you have known sensitivities.

Masturbation Creams
Masturbation creams are specifically designed for penis-focused solo play, offering a thicker, longer-lasting glide than many traditional lubricants. Many of these products fall into the oil-based category, which gives them a rich, cushioning texture that reduces friction and allows for extended sessions without constant reapplication.
Because of this, they’re fantastic for masturbation, but they’re not always suitable for vaginal use, and many are not compatible with latex condoms. We always recommend checking the label before using them for anything beyond their intended purpose. At Betty’s, we often suggest masturbation creams to customers looking for:
- Longer-lasting lubrication without drying out
- A thicker, more cushioned feel
- Enhanced comfort during solo play

Realistic “Cum” or Semen-Style Lubricants
These are one of the more playful and popular categories we carry and they tend to surprise people in the best way.
Realistic “cum” lubricants are either water/silicone hybrid formulas or enhanced water- based lubes with a thicker, creamier texture that mimics the look and feel of natural ejaculate. They’re designed to be slick, long-lasting, and visually fun, adding a new layer of realism and excitement to play. Many of these lubricants are also safe for oral use in moderation, making them a versatile option for couples and solo users alike. We often recommend these to customers who want:
- A thicker, more realistic texture
- An enhancement for a squirting dildo
- Something playful and visually engaging

Flavored Lubricants
Flavored lubricants are a fun and approachable way to make oral play more enjoyable, especially for couples who want to add a little variety or sweetness to the experience.
At Betty’s, flavored lubricants are typically water-based formulas, and they’re sweetened with ingredients like sucralose or aspartame, making them safe to taste and use during oral play. They’re designed to provide a smooth glide while also adding a pleasant flavor, which can help reduce hesitation or make intimate moments feel more playful and relaxed. We often suggest flavored lubricants to customers who:
- Want to make oral play more enjoyable
- Are new to using lubricant and want something fun and approachable
- Prefer a lighter, easy-to-use formula.

Heating and Cooling Lubricants
If you’re curious about exploring new sensations, heating and cooling lubricants are a great place to start. These lubricants are formulated with ingredients like menthol, cinnamon bark extract, or ginger root, which create warming or cooling sensations when applied to the skin.
Some people find that these sensations can enhance arousal and increase awareness of touch, adding a new dimension to intimacy. That said, these formulas can be a bit more intense, so we usually recommend starting with a small amount. Make sure you read the ingredients carefully for any allergens and possibly avoid these types of lube if you have particularly sensitive skin. At Betty’s, we often suggest these to customers who:
- Want to explore sensation play
- Are looking to enhance arousal
- Enjoy trying something new and different

Vaginal Moisturizers, Lubricants, and Menopause
We also talk with many customers who are navigating perimenopause or menopause, when vaginal dryness becomes more common due to declining estrogen levels. If you have internal dryness, lubricants help during intimacy, but another external option worth knowing about is vaginal moisturizers.
Unlike lubricants, moisturizers are designed to be used externally on the vulva, labia, and mons (basically all of the outer parts). They’re often used every few days rather than just during intimacy and often contain soothing oils like coconut, shea, and vitamin E.
While no lubricant is perfect for every person, Betty’s expert staff have picked out what we consider some excellent choices for the perimenopausal and menopausal vagina. We look for simple ingredients that are beneficial to delicate vaginal tissues - like hyaluronic acid and aloe - while avoiding possible irritants like glycerin and propylene glycol. pH balance and a safe osmolality are also critical in this category.
Many people find the best comfort by using both:
- A vaginal moisturizer regularly
- A lubricant during sexual activity
This combination helps maintain hydration while still providing a smooth glide when needed.
Choosing the Right Lubricant for Your Body
If there’s one thing our team has learned, it’s that there isn’t a single “best” lubricant for everyone. The right choice depends on factors like:
- Whether you’re using toys
- Whether you’re using condoms
- Sensitivity to certain ingredients
- Desired thickness or texture
- The type of play you’re having
- Duration of play
- Vaginal dryness or menopause
Many of our customers end up keeping more than one type of lubricant on hand for different situations.
How to Use Personal Lubricant
Using lubricant is simple, but a few tips can make the experience even better.
-
Start with a small amount and add more as needed. A little goes a long way, but you can always apply more if things start to feel dry. Much easier than trying to wipe up a slippery mess.
-
Warm the lubricant between your hands before applying it to the body. This helps it feel more natural and comfortable.
-
Apply lubricant not only to the body but also to toys or condoms to maximize smoothness and reduce friction.
-
Keep some tissues or a gentle cloth nearby for any cleanup
-
Use a towel or waterproof throw under you, particularly when using oil or silicone-based lubricants
-
Wash your toys afterwards to avoid damaging the materials or getting any crusty bits dried on
And don’t be afraid to reapply. Lubricant is meant to enhance pleasure, and using more whenever you need it is perfectly normal.
The Bottom Line
At Betty’s, we love lube. Personal lubricant is one of the easiest and most helpful tools for improving comfort, pleasure, and confidence during intimate moments.
Understanding the differences between lubricant types and how things like pH balance and osmolality affect the body can help you choose products that work with your body rather than against it.
