Betty's Checklist for Choosing the Perfect Vibrator

Vibrators come in so many shapes and sizes, it can be impossible to choose. Every year hundreds of new styles hit the market with promises of superior orgasms and mind-blowing stimulation but how do you wade through the endless choices and choose the perfect vibrator for you? Here is a check-list for choosing the perfect vibrator for your body and your needs.

CAN I AFFORD IT?

At Betty’s we NEVER want you to blow your budget on an expensive vibrator if you have no idea what you want. Think about what you want to spend and work within that budget. There are plenty of lower cost vibes out there which will allow you to figure out what you like (and hate) if you want to save up for something pricier later on.

DO I WANT SOMETHING INSERTABLE?

gigi pink vibratorDo you want to be able to insert this vibrator into your body – either vaginally or anally? If that thought holds some appeal, then a small bullet vibrator is not going to do the job. Particularly with anal play, only use toys with a flared base or large handle so that it doesn’t get pulled into the rectum by those powerful muscles (Yes it happens. Yes, it will get stuck). We have 2 articles you should check out if you’re looking for anal play toys. Beginner’s Guide to Prostate (or P-Spot) Stimulation and 6 Steps to Great First-Time Anal Sex for Women. The bonus of getting a longer vibrator like the Turbo Glider Raspberry Crush Vibe is that you can explore both internal and external stimulation safely and figure out what you like. If you have a bigger budget, the LELO Gigi G-Spot Vibrator is a great high-end splurge for its silky silicone and multiple speeds and intensities.

AM I USING IT WITH A PARTNER or SOLO or BOTH?

Many folks have their first vibrator experience with a partner and there is certainly no shortage of couple’s toys out there but not all of them are a great fit when you try to use them solo. A great bullet like the Exposed Nocturnal Rechargeable Lipstick Vibrator is a classic bullet shaped vibrator but it is compact enough to fit between you and act as a stimulator during partnered sex as well. Similarly, the B Near Classic Double Bullet Vibrators has a wired remote control and a great price point to let you experiment with what you like. Wands are also great for sharing or using solo.

WHAT TURNS ME ON WHEN I’M ALONE?

If you like really intense clitoral stimulation, then you may want to try an air pressure toy like the Womanizer Starlet which is the compact, beginner’s version of this line of clitoral powerhouse toys. If you love finger stimulation on the clitoris, the Finn Finger Vibrator may be more your speed since it acts almost like an extension and enhancement to your fingers.

For lovers of all-around stimulation, the Magic Wand Original has, for over 30 years, been a budget friendly, powerful machine that can caress every inch of skin. And, of course, there is always the classic rabbit vibrator for that fantastic feeling of fullness plus external stimulation. We recommend the B Yours Beginner Bunny Rabbit Vibrator as a great, reasonably priced starter, with the Disco Bunny Waterproof Rabbit Vibrator being a great choice for a slightly larger budget.

Let’s not forget the penis and prostate either. There are lot of vibrators to add to your masturbation game. At the top end, with a luxury price tag, is the LELO Loki Wave which is not only insertable for the prostate but has a waving arm which stimulates the perineum as well. A more affordable version is the B Filled Deluxe Silicone Prostate Massager by B Swish with the same dual action.

DOES IT NEED TO BE QUIET OR WATERPROOF?

Got roommates? Like to indulge in the shower or tub? You don’t want to break out your new vibrator and discover it sounds like a jet plane coming in for a landing or shorts out at the first hint of water. For near silent external stimulation and waterproof play, we love the We-Vibe Touch and the FemmeFunn Ultra Bullet. For rabbit styled toys, steer clear of rotating shafts because those tend to be not only noisy, and not very waterproof. We like the Hop Lola Bunny for both its relatively quiet motor and total water resistance.

Two rules of thumb for finding a quiet toy:

  1. The bigger the toy, the louder it generally gets.
  2. Silicone is quieter than plastic

And one big one for waterproof toys:

Splash proof and waterproof are not the same thing. Splash proof cannot withstand a lot of water exposure and you cannot submerge it at all.

And, of course, if you still don’t know which way to turn, you can always hop on Betty’s live chat for some help in choosing. Our expert staff are always happy to help.
