How to Use a Vibrator: A Guide to Your First Time

Congratulations on entering the wonderful world of vibrators! If you are reading this then you have either bought or been gifted a vibrator and are probably looking at it with some confusion and maybe some nerves. And that is completely normal and fine. At Betty’s, we are here to help you figure it all out.

Vibrators come in thousands of different sizes and shapes but we at Betty’s think there are some basics that will help you get started no matter what kind of vibe you have in your hand. Some of these tips may seem a bit simple but they will help you get started and feel more confident when it comes time to play.

READ THE BOX AND INSTRUCTION MANUAL FIRST

This will tell you

  • What kinds of functions the vibrator contains i.e. How many levels of vibration, how many patterns of pulsation – some will even tell you exactly how to use it
  • How the buttons work and what each one does
  • Whether it needs charging or new batteries before you start
  • How to charge it
  • Whether it has features like waterproofing

UNPACKAGE AND GIVE IT A GOOD WASH IN WARM SOAPY WATER

  • The manufacturer may recommend toy cleaner, but warm soapy water will do the trick as well
  • Pat dry and store it in a dust-free location until you are ready to use it. Some vibes even come with a handy storage bag

GET COMFORTABLE AND GIVE YOURSELF TIME

  • We recommend trying a new vibrator solo before you introduce it to couple time. Once you know how it feels, you can help your partner use it in a way that works for both of you
  • Start by experimenting with the buttons and what they do so you will know how to control the functions of the vibrator once you get started
  • If you have an air pulsation toy, try it on the tip of your nose to see how it works and feels.

GET TURNED ON

Dame Kip Waterproof Lipstick Vibrator - Yellow

  • Start on the lowest setting
  • Stroke the vibrator along your legs, arms or breasts and see how the vibration feels.
  • The more foreplay you give yourself, the more receptive you will be to the vibrator, particularly if you are planning on inserting it

USE LOTS OF GOOD QUALITY LUBRICANT

  • Even if you produce a good quantity of natural lubricant, buying a good quality lube to go with your vibrator is always a fantastic idea
  • Water based lube will help the material of your toy glide against your skin
  • If you are inserting a toy, lubricant will make you feel more comfortable and confident

START LOW AND SLOW

  • Start with the lowest constant vibration setting
  • If you are concerned it may be too intense, use the vibrator through your underwear or drape and sheet or towel between you and the vibrator.
  • Experiment with where you place the vibrator and how much pressure you use
  • Once you get the hang of the lowest settings, you can experiment with more intensity

THERE ARE NO RULES… WELL, MAYBE ONE

  • Remember, this is your body and your pleasure. Just because a rabbit vibrator is shaped to go in a vagina and stimulate a clitoris at the same time does not mean YOU have to use it that way
  • Any style of vibrator can be played with and experimented with so that you can find how it pleases you the most
  • And the rule… Do not insert anything anally unless it has a broad base made for anal play. If you are not sure what we mean, you can watch our video Anal Safety 101: What You Can and Can't Put in Your Butt

SOME FINAL PARTING WORDS OF WISDOM FROM BETTY

Not every vibrator is a good fit for every person. It is possible to not enjoy a vibrator, particularly your very first vibrator, and that is ok. There is NOTHING wrong with you. Just because an item is celebrity endorsed of your best friend loved it does not mean you should too.

If you are struggling to enjoy your vibrator, think about what you would prefer. Our staff at Betty’s are trained to help you find a vibrator that will help you feel amazing.

And do not forget, if you have questions, our staff are always here to help and to answer questions. We wish you all good vibrations!
